Small businesses don’t have limitless advertising budgets. In fact, in this day and age even the large corporations no longer have unlimited funds to spend on advertising and marketing. However, the limitations are amplified when looking at the challenges faced by a small business. This is why learning how marketing small businesses online works can be a huge asset for a business owner. It can also form the basis for forming an entire new business. So many small businesses can benefit from online marketing services that there is a huge market for companies to open their doors and provide internet marketing services to other small businesses in the area.

So, how are small businesses best marketed online? It is actually much easier than it might seem at first. Although there are many more complicated aspects to this type of business that can develop down the road, and as companies continue to improve their online marketing, most firms can actually accomplish a great deal with relatively simple methods.

The first step to marketing a business online is making sure that a business has a usable and effective website. The next step is to get people to that website. When starting internet marketing steps from the very beginning, we can divide the marketing efforts into three basic categories. These are search, social media or content and social networking. If all three of these elements can begin functioning, you are well on your way to marketing any small business online.

The search element of marketing a business online is based partly on the website you have, and partly on the content that you have pointing to that site, among other factors. One area to concentrate on is that of local search. Small businesses are likely going to benefit the most by customers who find them online and then come into their physical store to make a purchase. Utilizing tools like Google places and online Yellow pages listings is going to be extremely important for success in this particular type of online marketing.

The next way to market a business online is to start a strong social media campaign. This is going to mean creating lots of content for the business. The content can and should be about anything that is related to the niche that the business operates in, but there is one thing that it absolutely must not be. This is an advertisement. When writing articles or making videos which are part of an online marketing campaign, the one thing to never do is make them advertisements. This might seem counterintuitive to some people, but the most successful content is that which provides good information and content without seeming like it is pressuring people to visit a website or make a purchase. This is the type of content that will ultimately raise trust and the profile of the company that you are promoting.

The final leg of this initial primer on how to market a business online is social networking. Almost everyone is now connected via Twitter and Facebook. A business should take advantage of these same tools so that they can connect to their customers. This provides a business with a tool to engage in an ongoing conversation with their customers, which can be a very valuable way to get people interested in their services.

If you can combine a good website with a local search presence, a social media creation plan, and social networking profiles, you will be well on your way to successful promotion of a business online. These steps alone when followed for a reasonable amount of time can start to boost business for any company.

Well, I gotta say, sometimes you’re in the right place at the right time. I’ll keep this short, as I’m sitting in a room with 200 people watching something as I type this, that I think, is likely the next BIG thing on the Internet.

No, not big like SEO. Big like the WWW. Bigger than local.

At the Stompernet event, on 10/9/10 at 4:27 pm Brad Fallon, Stompernet CEO, annouced for the first time publically uQast.

uQast is an amazing way to deliver real, user rated, user driven content with a powerful affilitate program.

There is currently a patent pending under the name of Brad Fallon and Andy Edmunds. This patent is for ReviewRank, their proprietary algorithm. Brad is an SEO legend. He knows algorithms. He understands and has beat the algorithm for Google. Heck, it’s his company that has taught me. I have 100′s of keywords #1 in Google. Try Googling [local marketing].

Here it is folks…the live link!

http://dev.uqast.com/learn_more.htm

I mean, this is awesome!

Anyhow, Brad revealed a few new tibits of information for the algorithm. It’s your typical stuff, marketing. This is user driven content, right? So, let’s see, what are the factors? Maybe….
-how much it’s shared
-opt-in numbers (email opt ins right on the publishers page on uQast!)
-Conversion to sales
-Reviews
-Likes
-Tweets
-Time?

The launch is in three phases.
1. The Internet Marketing Crowd (once they have 10,000 affiliates!
2. Content Providers (hey, we have all these affiliates to promote your stuff!)
3. The World!

This is going to change local musicians, authors, publishers, you get it!

Folks, this is a way to monetize sites like youtube. It’s brilliant! Well, youtube is for consumers generated useless media. This is about quality. Period. It gets better.

Google TV (GTV) is being launched next month. We know this is going to change how we watch media in our homes, forever. Now LMS students will have the freedom to watch their favorite LMS content on their big screen and listen to me through their surround sound system!

I just gotta say, the features of this are AMAZING. We hear it’ll be live in about a week.

Social media has become one of the most important aspects of the internet from a marketing perspective. Ensuring that you are familiar with how social media works, and launching an effective social media campaign is something that can really help a local business to succeed on the internet. When you’re looking for marketing tips for small business owners on the internet, one of the common themes that you will see again and again is that you need to start making social media work for you.

First, we need to look at the concept of lead generation. Essentially, when discussing an online marketplace, a lead could be defined as anyone who visits your website or, if you’re looking for a more narrow definition, a person who contacts your company regarding your products or services. Either way, social media can be a very effective tool for generating these types of leads.

Social media can be any type of media or content that you create online. Many people are unclear about the definitions of social media, but it is essentially any type of content which can be shared, commented on, linked to, and which becomes more popular based on how many people are interested in it. Written content and articles, videos, audio material, and graphical content can all be social media.

All of these types of media can help drive people to your website. In order to get people to view your media, which is the important first step, and then to follow the link from that media back to your website, there are things you need to focus on. You need to create great media which people have a reason to view, you need to make media that people want to share, and you need to give people a reason to bother clicking through to your site.

There are basically three types of social media which can help you to generate leads. These are entertaining, informative, or newsworthy. Controversial media typically falls into any of those three categories, but can also be viewed as its own type of media which can also effectively generate considerable attention.

When you create entertaining media, you need to make sure that you are not advertising. Instead, make a genuine effort to entertain people on the internet. The link or mention of your company in the media is all you need to generate traffic if the media is genuinely entertaining for people. This can be the best type of media to go viral, because if it is generally funny or entertaining, the people who see it are going to recommend it or share it with their friends. This is the key to lead generation through social media.

If you’re creating informative media, you set yourself and your company up to be an expert in your niche. This is a great move because then the people that visit your site will already trust in your business and your area of expertise. This makes visitors more likely to decide that your product or service is the one they are looking for. Provide real information that provides a real benefit to readers for the best results.

Newsworthy material in your industry is perhaps one of the best kinds of social media, because it will rise quickly through the ranks on sites like Digg. In addition, if you’re posting newsworthy information on your own blog or social networking profile, other people in the industry will be very likely to link to it or recommend it to others. This can drum up a lot of attention very quickly for your company, as well as improving your SEO profile due to increased back links to your site.

As a category, social networking sites are probably the most widely used sites on the internet after search engines. Sites like Facebook and Twitter are mentioned as the power houses of the internet, along with Google. So if you’re trying to market a business online, you can’t overlook their potential as a small business marketing tool.

Almost everyone that is online now has a Facebook profile or a Twitter account, and each of these people can be considered a potential customer. By trying to find ways to promote your products on those sites, you are going to be reaching many more customers than you would if you just stuck to other methods of online marketing, like SEO. This isn’t a recommendation that those methods be abandoned, but rather a suggestion that you can create an even more successful business by augmenting your existing internet marketing campaign so that it includes these more social advertising opportunities.

There are two ways to boost your sales through social networking sites. The first is to use the sites as a marketing tool and create profiles for your business on these sites. This is a great way to interact with your customers, grow trust in your brand, and to start and open an engaging dialogue about your services and niche with the public.

If you choose to do this on Facebook, you will set up a business page, rather than a normal profile. There is no such distinction on Twitter. Then on Facebook, rather than having people become friends with your business like they would with your personal profile, they will ‘like’ your business page instead. This is a great way to build a following. On Twitter, you would set up and run a business profile similar to how you would a personal.

There are also paid advertising options that you can explore in the realm of social networking. Because social networking is still relatively new in terms of the life of the internet, there is still likely going to be more growth and development in how these advertising models work. As it is, though, there are ways that you can pay to advertise your products through social networks; most notably and powerfully, through Facebook.

Facebook has a powerful system for buying advertising. This works on a system like that used by the major search engines; a pay per click system. This means that you will bid a certain amount that you want to pay each time a person clicks on your ad. You will then only pay when someone actually clicks through to your ad, not just when your ad is displayed. This is a great model for at least ensuring that your message is being seen.

The great aspect of these ads is like everything else on social networking sites, they’re social. If someone likes an ad that you’ve posted, they can actually ‘like’ it. This will get it to show up their news feed, and the news feeds of their friends, who will then hopefully click on the link, ‘like’ it, and repeat the process. This social aspect of advertising is what makes the process of advertising with Facebook so appealing. People are also much more likely to trust a product or company when it comes recommended by a friend than if it was simply a random ad appearing on a web page.

With Facebook, there is also a strong market for advertising within applications, as well as on the primary pages. So, if you have an ad that is successful or an ad that is in a successful application, then the social sharing aspect of the site should make your message spread like wildfire.

Social media is one of the most valuable types of internet marketing that a company can engage in. You can use social media in so many different ways to increase the profitability of your business, and it is those multiple benefits that make it so worth pursuing. Social media is a method that is recommended by all the top internet marketing experts like Scott Gallagher, so it’s worth taking the time to look into how you could be increasing leads through the use of social media.

Social media includes almost all types of content that can be created online. It doesn’t matter whether the content that you’re creating is text based, graphic (images), video content, or audio content (like podcasts.) What is important is that you’re creating high quality content, and that you’re releasing it regularly to social media sites. This is a VERY important strategy, and it is the first step in your social media lead gathering.

So, what type of media do you need to create in order to bring leads into your business? There are a few things that work as good types of social media and a few that don’t. The kinds that do work are materials that are funny, informative, or controversial. What doesn’t work in almost every case is anything which is simply promotional, or a hard sale piece of advertising.

When you create something that is funny or controversial, it is going to stick with those who view the media. These types of media can be among the best, because people are more likely to recommend this type of media, or to try and share it with their friends. That is the best possible scenario with social media. You want something to spread among the internet, such as when people share something on Facebook or recommend a YouTube video to their friends. This is how lead generation online works, and funny and controversial materials are often a good starting point for getting social media to spread.

Of course, once people become exposed to your media, they’re in a way a lead, but a rather tenuous one. From there, it’s up to you to nurture that lead and grow it until the person becomes a customer of your company. Getting someone to become a customer is all about making them feel comfortable with and trusting your company, and the best way to do that is through conversation.

Social media is all about sharing and discussion. If you post a great piece of media, there is a very good chance that you’re going to get people commenting on it. These are your leads, and you need to encourage them to become more. This is where many people fall apart on their social media strategies. They don’t realize that replying to the comments on media can be as important as the creation of the media itself.

When someone comments, you must reply. That is a rule that you should stick to almost all the time, the obvious exceptions like SPAM comments notwithstanding. When you reply, you should try to be open and honest. Don’t reply defensively to anything that you perceive as an attack on your company. Remember that not only will the person you’re replying to see your comment, but so will everyone else that is reading the media. Even if you can’t convince that person to change their stance, a level headed and open reply to a hostile response can help turn other readers into strong leads as well. Keep a steady cycle of social content creation going at all times and the effects will build on each other for the greatest lead generation success.

Anyone that has their own business knows the value of networking. It is through the connections that you have with clients, other business owners, and even competitors that will ultimately provide you with the leverage to increase the profitability of your business. What people need to learn now is that internet local marketing can give you the ability to network on the internet in ways that, until now, were only possible in real world settings.

In the past, networking was a function that had to involve meeting people face to face. It was in order to gain contacts that people would do things like attending meetings of local business owners, become members of industry associations, and attend conferences and workshops. While all of these are still worthwhile pursuits, and can be valuable networking sources, it can be much easier and quicker to network with like minded people online.

You may have heard about the most popular trend on the internet over the last couple of years, and this is that of social networking. Social networking is a type of website that connects its users in a variety of ways. They can chat with each other; keep each other posted about what’s going on in their lives or businesses, share content, and more. Social networking provides a huge opportunity for small businesses to network with other business owners, and with potential customers.

There are a lot of players in the social networking game that can be useful for a small business, and they’re all worth examining. Facebook is probably the most well known example, and having a small business page on Facebook is a must. You can have a page for your business which customers can ‘like’. This is a great place to update customers with specials and developments at your business. You can also have a personal profile page which you might use to connect yourself with other business owners and peers that you want to stay in communication with.

Twitter is another very popular site of this nature. Twitter is essentially a micro blogging platform, where you can offer short, to the point updates, or ‘tweets’ to those who are following you. Twitter is incredibly popular, and a great mobile social networking tool, so it’s good to have a consistently updated Twitter profile as well.

LinkedIn is another site that can be great for networking with other professionals. Typically, this is a site which is much more business oriented than the others, which tend to be more socially oriented. If you’re interested in networking mostly with other professionals in or around your industry, then you should build a complete LinkedIn profile immediately.

These are just a few of the networking opportunities which exist online. There are many more sites, and many industry specific sites which can be a great way to network with others. Blogs are a great place to meet contacts. If you read a blog post which you find interesting, or which you have feedback on, be sure to leave a comment. That can stir great discussion and get you in touch with like minded people.

Forums are another place where conversations can start and you can meet people that you should be networking with. A quick Google search will usually show results for many different message boards and forums in almost any industry. Posting there can be a great way to introduce yourself to others in your field.

The best part about all of these various types of networking is that they all can be done with very little time investment. A little time each day on your social profiles, blogs, and forums, can yield some great contacts over time.

When you’re trying to create a marketing campaign for a small business, you need to think about the best ways to generate the maximum effect for the minimum effort. While this is surely a truism which applies to all types of marketing, for all types of businesses, it is especially important in the case of a small business trying to promote itself online. Small businesses usually have less time and money than their larger competitors to devote to marketing, so they need to make the most of what they do have in order to create sustainability and growth within their company. With this in mind, one area of online small business marketing which companies cannot afford to ignore is that of social media.

If you’ve been online viewing ways to market your business at any time in the past, then you’ve very likely heard the phrase that ‘content is king’. This has been true for some time, and remains true today. If you want to start creating some attention on your business and to start driving traffic to your site, then you’re going to need to start creating some great content, especially content that you can use as social media.

Social media is that which you can post online that your customers, viewers, followers etc. can interact with in some way. This means that they can rate it, share it, comment on it, or essentially DO anything to it other than simply view it on a static page. There are many types of media which fall into this category. Articles which can be shared and commented on, or posted on sites like Digg (one of the largest and most important social media sites) and blog postings are both good examples of text based social media. Videos such as those on YouTube, podcasts, and pictures are all good examples of the different types of social media which exist.

There are a few goals that you’re aiming for when you start creating social media for your business. The one thing that you want is for people to start sharing your content. This is how businesses get noticed on the internet. If you create great content, such as an informative video, you can be sure that someone that views it is going to think that other people they know online might be interested in it. They will then recommend it on YouTube, share it on Facebook, or post a link to it on their Twitter feed. When this happens, the effect repeats itself and grows, creating more awareness of your business, and a viral effect with your social media.

The other thing that you’re hoping to do with social media is to start a conversation. It’s important that small business owners realize that they shouldn’t just create media and post it and forget about it. What you want is for people to comment on your video, article, or blog posting, and then to engage in conversation with them about it. When you converse openly with your customers it helps to create both interest and trust in your company. Many customers start out as idle viewers of media online, but after some engaging conversation become actual customers.

If you’re looking for effective ways to promote a small business online, then you need to at least consider what social media can offer you. Creating this type of content generally requires a relatively small investment of time compared to the rewards that you can enjoy if a piece of content begins to spread online. If you’re not already engaged in a social media creation campaign, it may be time to consider one.

Many local businesses are accustomed to building and using their own websites to advertise and sell products. Some local businesses are happy staying within their comfort zone and not expanding their search; choosing to only market local people within their niche. For those who wish to expand their leads past their own website, social networks are a wonderful start for obtaining future business.

Out of all the social networks, the best platform to establish a local business is Facebook. When a business thinks of Facebook, they mostly think of their teenage children sitting at their computer, chatting with their friends. How could this possibly be a valid source of new business leads?

To many a local business’s surprise, advertising on Facebook is painless. Facebook is a wonderful way to search; marketing local people in their area by finding new leads that are associated with current clients. Through these existing clients, they are introduced to others who are interested in that business’s niche. This allows the business to chat with clients and possibly take advantage of features on Facebook, such as easing their search, marketing local people and businesses within their own community, and having virtual parties with new clientele. These virtual parties have been proven to bring others of similar niches together to help local companies.

Local businesses that wish to establish themselves on Facebook need to first create a stunning profile that catches others interests. Through this profile, a company can search, marketing local people from their community through information such as the company’s niche, its hometown, and people associated with the company. Most Facebook users want to be associated with others from their community, since it creates possible leads for them when it comes to their own employment and enjoyment. It is also wise for local business to attempt search marketing local groups in their community who share the company’s niche.

For companies who wish to try search marketing local leads in their area, there are also the more traditional methods of advertising on Facebook. When companies first join Facebook, they can create free ads on the social network by joining their Visa Business Network. Once a business joins this network, they will receive a coupon for a free ad and other promotional offers at varying times. Unlike many other online resources, an ad that appears on Facebook for a few hours in one day is seen by millions of people all over the world, creating new business outside of their community.

When a company desires to connect with others on Facebook, they need to remember that, above all else, it is a networking site. Through making connections with others, businesses can create soft sales and promote their business in a way that does not overextend their marketing budget.

For a company that is concerned with search marketing local people in their area, this is the most inexpensive method of advertising that has the potential to be a major success to small, local businesses. Through a multitude of different applications, newsfeeds, groups, and built in marketing resources, Facebook has prepared businesses to expect nothing but success on this multi-million dollar social network.

In the marketing toolbox for local businesses, there are several options to help promote a local business using the Internet. We all know that social media is taking business by storm and search engines drive more traffic to a website than all other mediums combined.

The following strategy takes the top two online methods to drive traffic, social media and search engines, and combines them to leverage the power of the Internet for small business. Using a popular Web 2.0 site, Squidoo, I cover some basic tips when creating a Squidoo lens to drive traffic and help your search engine rankings.

1. You want to write on a topic that has a keyword that is related somewhat to your company. This is useful both from an SEO perspective, and will help to get your site to rank higher in the search engines, and will also help people to identify your site with your Squidoo lens.

2. Make more than one Lens. Unless you have a site which only sells one product to a very specific type of person, it is probably safe to say that you could write about many topics that could be related to your site in some way. Use those topics to help you create multiple Squidoo lenses.

3. Make sure that you keep updating your lens regularly. This will bring back older readers to your lens again and again. Also, don’t forget that the search engines are much fonder of sites which are updated regularly than those that have stagnant content.

4. Make sure your topic titles have your keywords in it. Titles and headlines are always given more weight in the search engines than keywords that are going to be in the middle of your content.

5. When selecting the URL for your lens, make sure that it has a valuable keyword for you included in it. This will help your SEO. It will also make your Lens URL easier for visitors to remember. This is an important strategy of marketing regardless of the type of website.

6. Don’t try and direct sell a product through a Squidoo Lens. Also, do not try to overly stuff a page with your keywords. Just use them here and there where it seems appropriate and the benefits will actually be greater in the long term.

7. Get other links to point to your Squidoo Lens. You can promote your Lens the same way that you would promote any other site. Bookmark content on social bookmarking sites, submit articles to directories, and comment in forums and blogs with your lens as your signature.

8. Use other modules with your Lens. If you like blogging, the Google Blog module is going to be one of your best choices for added modules.

9. Use Web 2.0 to your advantage. That means tweeting about your lens or linking to it occasionally from your Facebook status.

10. Make sure that your content actually answers a relevant question for the reader. This will build faith in your company, bring return traffic, and spread good word of mouth about your company.

The best online marketers make use of a variety of tools available to them on the internet and this certainly includes YouTube, the world’s largest video sharing site. Video marketing has quickly proven itself as one of the most effective ways to market products online, as it brings both a visual and an interactive element into the marketing campaigns which is largely lost with many static websites. Here are six great ways to help your business grow using the resources of YouTube.

1.	Don’t just post your videos on YouTube. In most cases, anything that you’re posting on YouTube should also be hosted on your own website somewhere. We all know how important it is to have content on our websites, and videos certainly count as content. In addition, people are very tired of the same old static sales pages, and videos have been shown in many cases to be valuable tools when it comes to boosting conversions.

2.	Remember to provide real value. The same rules apply to video content as written, and that is that you should never try to trick, manipulate, or hard sell your customer, and instead provide them with something that is actually useful to them.

3.	Have great headlines. Just like any other content, a great headline will get a viewer to give attention to the full content, in this case, watching your entire video.

4.	Make sure your first shot is a dynamic and interesting one that arouses interest. The preview shot of a YouTube video is related very closely to a headline, in that the more interesting it is, the better chance you have of getting a visitor to click on the play button and watch the rest of your video.

5.	Follow your good internet marketing rules that apply to all your other marketing efforts, such as tracking everything. Tube Mogul is suggested as a tool that can help you publish videos not only to YouTube, but also to the many other quality video directories that are out there. Then, it can also help you track the results and the data that you can get from the visits your videos get on these sites.

6.	Stay active with your video. Although it is reasonable to expect you to leave older videos alone after a period of time, you need to stick with them when they’re first posted. If people post something on the comments section, be sure to respond.
